Frequently Asked Questions
Part One: Hyaluronic Acid
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic Acid (or HA) is a natural substance in our body discovered in the 1930s. It is a sugar found naturally in our skin that holds water and keeps it hydrated and plump.
Now, we know that it is essential in many areas of our body, including our skin.
Hyaluronic Acid acts like a natural sponge in our body by holding a large amount of water to retain all that moisture in our skin and joints and also prevent it from evaporating into the air.
Why is Hyaluronic Acid important?
Over time, the amount of naturally made Hyaluronic Acid in our bodies decreases. Although we can slow the aging process by following a healthy diet and eating fruits and vegetables with antioxidants, it is not enough to fully recover what our skin lost.
Products with HA in their ingredient can help to maintain your skin and see the result instantly.
What is Injectable Hyaluronic Acid?
Injectables Hyaluronic Acid is a gel form product to inject into the dermal layer for skin volumizing. Depending on the products and injection area, it smooths the wrinkles, plumps the skin, and dissolves slowly between 6-18 months. The filling effect occurs by drawing water into the injected area and creating volumes.
The minimal Side effects: HA is something our bodies already produce; it’s considered safe for all injectables. It has minimal side effects if trained and certified skin care professionals perform it. The common side effect is swelling or bruising in the injected area that can last a few days.
What can injectable hyaluronic acid treat?
Injectable hyaluronic acid, or HA, is a popular aging and skin rejuvenation treatment. It can restore and enhance specific areas while improving skin quality. It is commonly employed for the following purposes:
- Rejuvenating and hydrating the skin on the face, neck, and hands.
- Treating and improving the appearance of injury and acne scars.
- Enhancing the shape of cheeks, chin, and nose.
- Adding volume and definition to the lips.
- Correcting fine lines and wrinkles.
- Reducing the signs of skin aging, such as wrinkles and sagging.
Who can administer injectable hyaluronic acid dermal fillers?
The authority to administer hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can vary by jurisdiction, so it’s essential to check with your local health authorities. In general, only registered skincare professionals are permitted to perform these injections. In some regions, registered nurses may also be authorized to administer them, but in many areas, only trained physicians, dermatologists, or plastic surgeons are allowed to do so.

Part Two: Treatment
Treatment Care : How should I prepare before my treatment?
It is highly recommended to do a consultation before your treatment, especially if this is your first time injecting dermal filler.
During the consultation session, your skincare professional can address your concerns and needs and explain the procedure. Your skincare professional will also ask about your medical history and medication, examine your skin, analyze your needs, and discuss your treatment plan.
It is important to inform your skin care professional if you are using any medications as some type of them (like aspirin) can increase the risk of side effects like bruising.
A week before your treatment session, it is recommended to stop taking anti-inflammatory and anti-coagulant drugs (e.g., Aspirin, Advil, Vitamin E) as they may increase swelling and bleeding at the injection area.
On the day of your treatment, ensure your skin is clean and without any makeup or other cosmetic products. You can use facial cleansing lotion to clean your skin and wash your face with cold water after cleaning.
You must fill out and sign a consent form that explains all the risks and possible side effects of your treatment.
Treatment Care: What do I expect during my treatment?
Depending on your treatment plan, your skin care professional may apply topical or inject anesthesia to numb the treatment area before your procedure to manage the possible pain. Once it takes effect, your skincare professional will complete your treatment by injecting Hyaluronic Acid with a series of small injections under your skin. It will restore the lost volume, fill wrinkles and folds, and smooth fine lines naturally.
Most treatments are quick and can quickly be done within 20-60 minutes, depending on your treatment plan.
Treatment Care: What should I after my treatment?
Hyaluronic Acid Dermal filler injection has minimal downtime after your treatment. You can get back to your regular activity right after your treatment with a few percussions in most cases.
For the first day following your treatment, you should avoid makeup, hot shower, and exposure to extreme heat like the direct sun or tanning bed, sauna, heavy activity, and consumption of alcoholic beverages to minimize temporary injection-related reactions.
It is recommended to avoid extreme heat like a hot shower or sauna to maintain your treatment’s best and long-lasting result.
Unless it is instructed by your skincare professional, don’t massage the treated area.
Some post-injection reactions or side effects related to your procedure may occur immediately following treatment or with a delay, such as redness, itching at the treatment site, pain, firmness, swelling, and bumps. These side effects usually resolve on their own in ten days or less. You can apply an ice pack on the treated area for a short time if you experience swelling or mild bruising.
You are advised to contact your skin care professional for a consultation if you experience any side effects.
You may consider discussing the next follow up with your skin care professional to maintain a long-lasting and optimal treatment.
How is the injection performed, and how long does it take?
The injection procedure for hyaluronic acid can vary based on the practitioner’s approach and the patient’s treatment plan. However, the general steps include:
- Cleansing the treatment areas with an antibacterial solution.
- Using a topical or injectable anesthetic in sensitive areas to minimize discomfort (some dermal fillers contain lidocaine).
- Injection of hyaluronic acid into the skin using a fine needle through a series of small injections.
- Massage the treated area to distribute the injected hyaluronic acid evenly.
The duration of the treatment can range from 20 to 60 minutes, depending on your specific treatment plan.
When can I see the results of Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers?
You can see the results immediately after your treatment. The optimal result happens after a month, as it will improve in the next 2-4 weeks after your treatment.
What is the recovery time?
Hyaluronic acid treatments generally involve minimal downtime. In most cases, patients can resume their daily routines immediately after the procedure. Common side effects may include temporary redness, swelling, and bruising, which typically subside within a few days.
When do I need to repeat my treatment?
Each long-lasting treatment depends on factors like the treated area, lifestyle, and dermal filler type. However, it is not permanent, and your body will absorb Hyaluronic Acid. It is recommended to consult with your skincare professional to have an optimal plan to maintain the result.
Generally, you are advised to repeat treatment every 6-18 months.
Is there an age restriction for Hyaluronic Acid injection?
Yes, there is an age restriction of 18 years for legal and safety reasons.
What is the difference between hyaluronic acid dermal fillers and botulinum toxin?
Both botulinum toxin and Hyaluronic Acid are injectable solutions to prevent and treat wrinkles.
The difference is in the way they work on our bodies. Hyaluronic Acid restores the lost volume of the skin due to the aging process. However, botulinum toxin prevents wrinkles by reducing muscle activity in the treated area.
Part Three: Possible Side Effects
What are the potential side effects of hyaluronic acid injection?
Hyaluronic acid injections can lead to potential immediate or delayed side effects, including:
- Inflammatory reactions include redness, swelling, itching, pain, and tenderness at the injection site.
- Induration (hardening of the skin) or the formation of nodules at the injection site.
- Poor filling results due to improper injection technique.
- Delayed or immediate hypersensitivity, abscess formation, and glabellar necrosis (though rare).
- Hematomas (collection of blood under the skin).
It is recommended to seek immediate medical attention if these reactions persist for over a week. These reactions typically occur immediately or 1-2 weeks after the injection, are usually mild to moderate, and last about two weeks. Patients experiencing such reactions should contact their physicians promptly. Treatment should be avoided for patients with multiple allergic reactions.

For more information, please refer to the leaflet of each product or speak to your practitioner.
Does Hyaluronic Acid have a conflict with other medications?
Although Hyaluronic Acid injection has minimal risk, certain medications can compromise the result or your safety. For example, it is highly recommended to avoid taking a high dose of anti-coagulants or anti-inflammatory drugs, Aspirin, and Vitamin E a week before your treatment to minimize the chance of bruising.
You are required to discuss your medication with your doctors before receiving the treatment.
Can I use different brands of Hyaluronic Acid injection?
Although all HA brands’ main ingredient is the same, it is highly advisable not to use different brands together. For more information, please refer to the technical data of each brand.
